| While visiting Calcutta, now known as Kolkata, some years ago, I was surprised to find a clean city with no hawkers or beggars on the street. As it turns out John Major, British PM at the time, had visited the day before. The Indian authorities had toured the city and carted off all the 'undesirables' to the countryside and they were apparently still walking back. The PM had no idea of this, presumably, and got the same bizarre view of one of India's most overpopulated cities that I initially had. |
