Extract from the Bradford Travel Guides:
In its Victorian heyday,
BRADFORD
was the world's biggest producer of worsted cloth, its skyline etched black with mill chimneys, and its hills clogged with some of the foulest back-to-back houses of any northern city. Today, the city has left this nether world behind and is valiantly laying on tourist attractions to rinse away its associations with urban decrepitude. A few spruced-up buildings and the rejuvenation of the late-Victorian woollen warehouse quarter, Little Germany, signify an attempt to beautify the city centre.

| Culture : Saltaire |
|
| The village of Saltaire was created by Sir Titus Salt in the 19th Century around the large woolen mill that he owned, so that his workforce would be near at hand.
The small houses were ahead of their time and even now are much sought after.
Titus also built a hospital, library and a beautiful and unusually designed chapel.
The one thing that Sir Titus would not countenance was a pub. There is still no pub in the village.
The mill is no longer a working mill, however part of it has been converted, through the efforts of the late Jonathan Silver, into a gallery dedicated to the paintings of his friend David Hockney.
Hockney, now resident in the USA, is native of the nearby urban village of Idle. |
