BAUG
- as easily reached by car from Saumur as Angers, 25km north of the river - the nuns at the
Chapelle des Incurables
claim to have a cross made from the True Cross. The wood is certainly Palestinian, though its history prior to its donation to an Angevin crusader is dubious. It is, anyhow, the double-armed cross that became the emblem of the dukes of Anjou and Lorraine and, in this century, of the Free French Forces. To see it, ring on the doorbell at 8 rue de la Girouardire (daily except Tues 2.30-4.15pm; free).
