AYACUCHO
("Purple Soul", from its Quechua origins) sits around 2800m high in the Andes in one of the most archeologically important valleys in Peru, with evidence from nearby caves at Pikimachay suggesting that the region has been occupied for over twenty thousand years. Ayacucho was the initial centre of the Huari culture which emerged in the region around 700 AD, spreading its powerful and evocative religious symbolism throughout most of Peru over the next three or four hundred years.
