Australia is massive, and very sparsely peopled: in size it rivals the USA, yet its population is just over eighteen million - little more than that of the Netherlands. This is an ancient land, and often looks it: in places, it's the most eroded, denuded and driest of continents, with much of central and western Australia - the bulk of the country - overwhelmingly arid and flat. In contrast, its cities - most of which were founded as recently as the mid-nineteenth century - express a youthful energy.

| To Stay : If You Are Going To Darwin... |
|
| If you go to Darwin, I highly reccomend staying at the Gecko Lodge. I had an awesome time there and the owners Marcel and Sue are very friendly. I was sick for part of my stay there, and Marcel took me in his car to the medical center and then all the way across the Darwin area to the only place that was open on a Sunday afternoon in order to pick up my medication. Gecko Lodge also gives an amazing pancake breakfast. |

| Getting Around : Options for getting around Oz |
|
| Your options are: backpacker buses are very popular, but better if avoided if their are a few of you. Greyhound, buses where you can buy a mileage pass. Car hires are quite expensive, so buying a car or, better, camper van and splitting the cost between a few is the best option. There are quite a few re-locations available around the country, if you keep an eye out. You will probably end up on a tour at some point (in the Northern Territory) and probably have to take internal flights if doing more than the east coast stretch |
