An austere-looking town,
AREPOLI
sets an immediate mood for the region. Until the nineteenth century it was secondary to tylo, 6km north and the gateway to the Msa Mni, but the modern road has made it, to all intents, the region's centre. Formerly Tsmova, its present name ("Town of Ares" - the god of war) was bestowed for its efforts during the War of Independence. It was here that Mavromihalis (commemorated by a statue in the main plata) declared the uprising.
The town's sights are archetypally Maniot in their anachronisms. The
