The next stop after Ahrweiler is
ALTENAHR
, a town which can only be described as picturesque and whose population seems to increase tenfold in the summer. It's horrendously clogged up then, but if you go off-season you could easily spend a few days here using the town as a base to explore the surrounding area. The landscape is magnificent - the valley is so narrow at this point it almost becomes a gorge and the town is situated on a tortuous bend in the river.
