Extract from the Albany Travel Guides: In 1826, two years before the establishment of the Swan River Colony, the British sent Major Lockyer and a team of hopeful colonists to settle the strategic Princess Royal Harbour . It was a pre-emptive response to French exploration of Australia's Southwest, and the small colony, originally called Fredrickstown, was allowed to grow at a natural pace - avoiding the vicissitudes of Swan River Mania that plagued Perth in the 1880s, when thousands of colonists poured into the town. To Stay : Stay Away
Albany is a piece of Sh***####T!! There are tons of cool places to go in Oz and this is certainly one to skip on the itinerary!! Just a Blow Hole and terrible accomadations.. This other guy.. is right. the Albany Backpackers is the worst place i stayed at as well.. funny thing is , i think they stuck me in that SAME room!!! DON'T GO!!!!

Whatever you do avoid this place. I will never forget the windowless room off the main common room - a health hazard! Also the long gangly guy at reception is one of the rudest and most obnoxious people I have ever met.
