The kernel of
AHRWEILER
dates back to the Middle Ages and seems wildly archaic with its narrow streets and half-timbered buildings. It's ringed by the
Stadtmauer
, built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries and still more or less intact despite numerous attempts to breach it during the Thirty Years War. Four gateways survive, including the
Niedertor
, which leads into Niederhutstrasse, the town centre's main commercial street, which has plenty of tacky souvenir shops, along with delicatessens and wine merchants.
